About the Art
Andy Warhol's 1972 Sunset series of prints highlights the simple elegance of a natural event that occurs every day. While still unconfirmed, the source of the prints may be his mesmerizing 1967 film, Sunset. Filmed in California, Sunset is a hypnotic lingering shot of the setting sun, similar in vein to Warhol's Empire film.
Warhol's Sunset print perfectly captures the moment the sun just begins to disappear below the horizon, using brilliant hues to add contrast and enhance the focus. Upon completion, 472 of the Sunset prints were hung in the guest rooms of the Hotel Marquette in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
