How to restore your iPod or iPhone manually

By Macologist Daniel A. posted on March 17th, 2010

When trying to restore an iPod touch or iPhone, if you cannot get iTunes to recognize your device, you must restore manually.

To do this:

  • plug it in to your computer
  • hold the home button and power button until the apple logo appears. This will launch iTunes and put the device into restore mode.

Sometimes this will not work, especially if a password has been set on the device. In cases like this, while still keeping the device plugged into your computer:

  • hold the home button and power button for 10 seconds
  • then release the power button and continue holding the home button for an additional 10 seconds.

This should boot the device into DFU mode and allow you to restore your device.
